Nonetheless, here are some notes from the artist.

In Psychology, sublimation is a defense mechanism where primal impulses (Id) are transformed into socially acceptable actions.

In Chemistry, sublimation is the transition of a substance directly from a solid / liquid state to a gas (like a cloud).

The pastel colors represent a positive, calm exterior, while the faceless cloud head and the moving tides or waves represent the untamed, mysterious and slightly unsettling depths of human psychology.

Totems are a cryptic nod to the human and animal figures.

Historically, a totem is a natural object, plant or animal that serves as an emblem for a group of people or family. It represents a spiritual connection between humans, nature, and the animal kingdoms.

The painting title, "Of Tides and Totems", is used metaphorically to mean (1) sacred symbols, (2) human-animal bond and (3) a guiding spirit.

1. Sacred symbols: The boy and the puppy in the clouds aren't just random shapes. They are meaningful symbols of companionship, youth and memory.

2. Human-animal bond: Totems traditionally bridges the gap between humans and animals.

3. Guiding Spirit: These hidden cloud figures are watching over or rising out of the multi-colored sea below.
